Press Release Afriqiyah Airways Flight 8U209

Afriqiyah Airways Flight 8U209 destined to Mitiga Airport in Tripoli from Tmenhent Airport near Sebha Airport in Libya was hijacked today. The aircraft Airbus 320, registration number 5A-ONB, left Tmenhent at 1010h and had 111 passengers and 6 crewmembers on board.

When the aircraft reached a cruising altitude of 36,000 feet, the pilot received a request to land in Rome. He was also informed from a crewmember that the hijackers were armed.

The hijackers refused the proposal from the pilot to land the aircraft in Tripoli and negotiate there. Subsequently a decision was taken to land the aircraft in Malta because of fuel limitations. The aircraft landed in Malta at 1132.

The authorities in Malta and Tripoli negotiated the demands of the hijackers. The dialogue yielded the release of all passengers and the crew members. The company is committed to cooperate with all the authorities in the investigations and is committed to assist all passengers aboard. A chartered flight will be operated today by the airline to repatriate the passengers.

The Chairman of the Airline Abubaker ElFortia thanked the Maltese Prime Minsiter and the Maltese Government and those involved in the resolution of this situation.
